Modern NBA cards have hit a bit of a slump lately, deferring to more established (vinage) stars. A bounce back could see this card pop 50% or more.

What is the 2000 Playoff Contenders Factory Sealed Hobby Box?

This set is described as the cornerstone to the modern football card hobby market. The main lottery ticket you’re going for is the Tom Brady rookie card. A BGS 9 is currently worth $1.5m.

For that card, 100 were minted. 72 have been registered with Beckett Grading Service, and 14 are with PSA. So 14 more cards are floating around somewhere….one of them *could* be in this

Tom Brady, Etremely Unlikeable Human and probably the best quarterback of all time, leads the list of football icons you’ll find in this box.

Among the other starts you might pull:

But all those cards can be had for less than $200. Brady is really the one you want. Inferred Value – [Insiders Only]

As long as Brady rookies are still out there, this set will continue to have value. Tom Brady, age 43, refuses to retire and may yet win another Super Bowl or two. This would, obviously, increase the value of his rookie card.

Asset Liquidity

This will have a roughly 90 day lockup period then will trade weekly.

There’s something about a 21 year old sealed hobby box that sets the heart racing. So full of promise…

What is the Mike Trout 2009 Bowman Xfractor BGS 9.5?

This is the first Mike Trout autographed rookie card, appearing a year before he debuted in the majors,

Numbered 24 of 225. this card is rated BGS 9.5. There are three cards rated higher.

It’s worth noting that among BGS 9.5s, this card receive the lowest possible rating due to its 3 x 9.5 subgrades and 1 x 9.0 (many other BGS 9.5 cards have a 10 subgrade). Of the 105 BGS 9.5 cards, there are three possible average scores (when you average the four subgrades together):

  • 9.63: 23 cards
  • 9.50: 48 cards
  • 9.38: 34 cards (including this one)

Cultural Relevance

Mike Trout is the best player in the game right now by some margin. Based on Moneyball metric Wins Above Replacement, he’s in the same category as Ty Cobb and Mickey Mantle.

A few notable acheivements:

  • Rookie of the year
  • Eight time All-Star
  • Three time league MVP
  • Leads all active players in slugging percentage and on-base plus slugging.

He is a very very good player, and while he’s a current player, his cards shouldn’t really be considered “modern.” He’ll be a tier one player for decades.

Inferred Value – [Insiders Only]

Rally bought this card at auction for $50k in January 2021, and there’s only been one noteworthy sale since then – a $75k fixed price sale of a BGS 9.5 with all four subgrades = 9.5.
