Magic Johnson Rookie Update

We have an update / correction to the briefing we sent out about the Magic Johnson 1981 Topps PSA IPO’ing on Otis Friday.

Our newest contributor, Adam, who does write ups for Sports Memorabilia, Video Games, and Game Trading Cards, spotted an auction result that our usual source of data didn’t include:

  • A PSA 10 hammered at $59k at Goldin Auctions five days ago.

In fact, none of the three data sources we subscribe to had this info. So well done to Adam.

Second thing, our usual source of data got the price wrong on a recent eBay Buy it Now, listing the sale price at $15k instead of $40k. Obviously a big difference.

This is the chart we presented yesterday:

And this is the new chart:

It’s not clear which recent result is the outlier — $20k or $60k, but it does present a less clear picture than we’d originally thought.

Based on the recent sales of PSA 9 and PSA 8 cards, I think the $60k sale is the outlier, and the Inferred Value of the card *is* around $20k.

Apologies for the mistake and huge thanks to Adam, who spotted the first error.
