About Nikola Jokic

At age 26, Jokic has arguably become the best center in the NBA and is almost assuredly going to be named MVP of the league this season. He is a three-time All-Star, soon to be three-time All-NBA and might just be the best passing big man of all-time. He has truly revolutionized the center position, basically acting as a point guard. He is originally from Serbia and has played his entire six-year career with the smaller-market Denver Nuggets, two factors that limit his popularity stateside. He is also a bit, well, doughy and that might affect his marketability. Take a look at how he compares to other contemporaries:

He is about to beat out Embiid, Doncic and Giannis for MVP and just knocked Lillard’s team out of the playoffs and his cultural profile is lagging way behind. He is definitely underappreciated, which means there’s room to grow, but considering he’s literally about to win the award for being the best player in the league this year, I’m not sure how much more he can do to raise his profile other than win a title.

Growth Potential and Future Catalysts

The Nuggets are still alive in the NBA playoffs but are a 2:1 underdog in their next round matchup against the Suns and are about 24:1 to win the championship. Obviously if they make a deep run or somehow win the title that will boost Jokic’s profile and desirability. More importantly, Jokic is a near-lock to win this season’s MVP award. When that is announced, there will surely be greater interest in his cards. To this date, no player has won the MVP award and not gone on to make the Hall of Fame (Derrick Rose, due to injury, is likely to be the first). This bodes extremely well for Jokic’s career path.
