About the creator

Gala Games is a game studio focussed on creating games on the blockchain. They have one game in beta now – Town Star – and several others in development. Their games are quite diverse including simulations, RPG, tower defense, strategy, and brawler. They’re looking to tick all the boxes.

This drop, initially, is specifically related to the Town Star game. The game is a pretty traditional town and city builder focussed on building an economy, growing crops, refining them into products, and selling them for profit.

There are a number of different “classes” of people in the game from lumberjacks to nuclear engineers, and that’s where the avatar drop comes in….

About the drop

On 10th August 2021, Gala released 8,888 Vox avatars across a number of classes and traits. Each class and trait has a set rarity, and as you’d expect, tougher jobs (classes) are more rare:

  • Farmer – 1,005 / 8,888
  • Miller – 987
  • Rancher – 924
  • Lumberjack – 895
  • ….
  • Freight captain – 211
  • Chemical engineer – 120
  • Nuclear engineer – 87

The Vox avatar above — one I bought to test out the mechanics — is a Lumberjack. Not so rare in terms of class, but its other properties *are* pretty rare.

So this one is ranked 2,134 out of 8,888 in terms of rarity. Gala Labs haven’t confirmed it yet, but it would make sense that each class of Vox had some special abilities in the Town Stars game – e.g. a Lumberjack Vox could collect more wood more quickly than a standard lumberjack in the game.

While the functionality hasn’t been enabled yet, Gala have commited to letting users stake GALA and earn VOXcoin by playing with their Voxes. The amount you earn is directly related to their rarity and how ofter you play the game.

VOXcoin will be able to be used across the Gala Games metaverse to buy upgrades, tools, weapons, skins, etc. At some point, users will likely be able to exchange it for other currencies (e.g. bitcoin).

Price

At launch, each Vox cost 0.0888 ETH, and that’s quickly jumped up to a floor of around 0.30 ETH. The drop itself had a number of problems, though, and may users didn’t get a Vox initially.

Prices for the rarer classes (engineers) are around 10x the floor at the moment with super rare classes (mechanical bots) going for 100x the floor. That’s roughly equivalent to CryptoPunks at the moment, so that checks out.

How to buy them

You can buy the Vox avatars on Opensea right now.

Make sure to download and install a metamask wallet ahead of time if you want to be able to buy right away.
