Cultural Relevance

We covered Andre the Giant when Collectable IPO’ed his jock strap, but we didn’t go into too much depth about the legendary rivalry between Mr The Giant and Hulk Hogan.

Considered by many to be one of the most important rivalries in wrestling history, they were a staple of the “sport” in the 1980s. This video of their appearance in the Main Event in 1988 has over 10m views.

Once good friends, their feud ramped up over the course of the decade and helped WWF become the media juggernaut it is today.

HBO made a documentary about Andre the Giant, and Hulk Hogan (aka Terry Eugene Bollea), features prominently in it.

From a cultural awareness point of view, Hogan is the bigger name. He was on the cover of dozens of WWF / WWE video games and featured in a couple dozen films and television shows. This includes the ill-fated Hogan Knows Best, which sort of followed his family (wife Linda, children Brooke and Nick) around in an Osbournes-esque kind of way.

It was cancelled subsequent to a couple scandals involving Hogan himself (allegedly had an affair with one of his daughter’s friends) and his son Nick (drunk driving leading to serious injury of a friend).

After divorcing Hogan (Bollea), Linda started dating a nineteen year old kid who went to high school with Nick and Brooke.

Really his family life is a bit of a tire fire, but he’s managed to stay in the headlines and public consciousness for decades.

Pro wrestling wouldn’t be where it is today if it weren’t for Hogan.

The man was a juggernaut, and their rivalry was legendary.

Growth Outlook and Future Catalysts

Wrestling, a bit like golf, has gone under the radar so far. Millions of people watch WWE today, and millions of others watched WWF in the 1980s. This has the potential to grow a bit, though it does have a long way to catch up to the market cap.

Intangibles

The consignor, who bought the pair of cards months ago for around $65k is pulling $61k out via the equity offering.

So only $4k invested, and he gets to retain a $61k equity stake and full control of the asset.

Very “have cake / eat cake” of him.

I think that stinks.

What is the 1985 O-Pee-Chee Mario Lemieux PSA 10?

This is is hockey legend Mario Lemieux’s rookie card from the 1985 O-Pee-Chee hockey set. Graded PSA 10, it’s in the top 1.5% of cards registered with PSA.

According to PSA, counterfeit versions of this card are common, though there’s nothing to suggest this card is one of them.

It IPOs on Rally 7th April.

Cultural Relevance

Considered one of the five best hockey players of all time, Lemieux was a prolific goal scorer. Despite battling cancer during the prime of his career, he recorded six consecutive 100-point years and recorded the fifth-highest points total ever for a season at 199 (the other four are Gretzky).

He initially retired in 1997 but came back in 2000 to play an additional five seasons in an attempt to save the financially decimated franchise.

Lemieux won two Stanley Cups as a player and one as an owner – the only man to do so.

He lags behind Gretzky in terms of relevance today and is overshadowed by modern great Sidney Crosby, but even casual fans know the name.

Two of his PSA 9s are at auction now with Heritage, so watch those for an indication of the 10’s value ticking back up. Anything above $6k will indicate the cards have hit a bottom, and $7k could a tracking back up.
