What is the Messi Rookie Basket?
This is a pair of rookie cards (one is a sticker) from Panini’s various sets in 2004 – 2005. There are a number of rookie cards for Messi from that year.
The first is a 2004 Panini Sports Mega Cracks PSA 10. There are relatively quite a few PSA 10s compared to what we’re used to seeing.
The second is a BGS 9.5 graded 2004 – 2005 Panini Colecciones Este La Liga Sticker. There’s a slightly longer tail here in the lower grades and four known BGS 10s.

There are a lot of his rookies, but compared to other major stars who broke out in the noughties — LeBron, Brady, there are relatively few. No refractors, only a couple major sets.
Messi has a long long way to go to catch up to the rest of his peers.

Cultural Relevance
Considered one of the ten best hockey players of all time, Lemieux was Crosby is still active, captaining the Pittsburgh Penguins.
He’s won three Stanley Cups, two Olympic gold medals, four Prince of Wales Trophies, three Ted Lindsay Awards and each of the Conn Smythe, Art Ross and Maurice Richard Trophies twice.
Slightly more oddball, he’s also got:
- An Order of Nova Scotia
- A Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal
- Two Emmy awards
Wayne Gretzky said of Crosby, “He’s proven over and over that he’s the best player in the game today. And it seems like the more important the game, the more impact that he makes on a game.”
Culturally, Crosby compares favourably to the other Hockey rookie to IPO this week, Mario Lemieux, and he’s in the ballpark compared to Gretzky himself.
He mostly stays out of the public eye and avoids social media, which hurts him a bit here.
Inferred Value – $56k
